Letter March

One linocut letter a day in March
This is an experiment in carving one linocut letter per day in an attempt to complete an entire alphabet by March 31st. Chosen typeface: Champion Gothic by Hoefler & Frere-Jones. Lightweight was chosen based on a deep rooted affection with its ampersand.

Today I tried out a little trick. Before cutting, I used a blow dryer to warm the block. This completely changed the texture beneath the surface. It definitely accelerated the process of cutting out the large chunks before changing to a smaller nib. Also, the straight cuts were more crisp and pretty close to perfect. Overall I’d say warming is a smart (and safer!) move. Thanks to Joana for the tip!
